What Is Scouting?

Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a worldwide youth movement with the stated aim of supporting young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, so that they may play constructive roles in society.

Scouting began in 1907 when Robert Baden-Powell, Lieutenant General in the British Army, held the first Scouting encampment at Brownsea Island in England.

  • WSPU Youth Exchange Programme welcomes Scouts from Africa

From 12th- 21st January 2012, Scouts from Ethiopia and Kenya joined by Korean Scouts, had the experience of a lifetime by taking part in the 2nd World Scout Parliamentary Union’s (WSPU) Youth Exchange Programme (YEP). This aim was to give the opportunity to Scouts from member countries of WSPU/WOSM to travel to a different country (often for the first time), meet Scouts from other countries and have the chance to share their culture and traditions including their Scout activities and experiences. The programme also included group discussions on youth participation in decision-making and debating on the role of young people in today’s society in the context of the challenges that they face everyday.

  • Risk management policy for quality Scouting

“It is high time for NSOs to develop a risk management policy to strengthen public confidence in what we do and how we do it.”

  • Sri Lanka's integration camps dispel differences, bridge similarities

A significant element of Scouting is peace, but for many years in Sri Lanka, this has been denied. Sri Lanka Scout Association is seeking to renew this hope by joining the Messengers of Peace project, to help young people overcome the longer effects of conflict, like prejudice, through a post-war integration camp among Singhalese and Tamil Scouts.

  • Messengers for Peace project request
All over the world Scouts are "Creating a Better World" by doing remarkable work in the communities in which they live. As Scouts, we are helping to alleviate a number of important social issues ranging from feeding the hungry to creating solutions to environmental issues. The Messengers for Peace initiative aims to bring this all together by creating a network of Scout service projects around the world. The South African Scout Association (SASA) encourages its members to initiate service projects within their communities. Groups can apply for funding for specific projects. Please distribute this message as widely as possible, especially to those groups that do not have internet access.
  • Programmes-on-a-Plate - a new resource for Cub leaders
